What is a worthwhile Golf Lesson? & How to learn Golf in a busy urban environment

Traditionally a golf lesson is taken on a driving range or at a golf course. In the past these lessons consisted of the coach watching the player hit a few shots and then giving him or her some advice based on his observations. The student will then hit more balls “Feeling” the change that the coach suggested, if the student hits good shots they will be happy, if not the coach would make another couple of suggestions until the student is hitting better shots etc. As the student can't see or understand the changes supposedly made, he or she trusts that the coach has got it right.

The coach takes your money and you go away from the lesson not really knowing what you have learnt.

Does this scenario sound familiar to you !

I believe that these days if a golf coach is not using at least a video camera, the students are not getting the best value for their money.

I have been teaching golf Indoors for 10 years, and during this time I have come to realise that most people learn better in an indoor environment as they are not adversely affected by “ball flight” Why ? Because we use video cameras, mirrors, golf simulators, teaching aids and launch monitors etc. We do not necessarily need to see the flight and the students can concentrate and work more on getting their bodies into the right position or shape to hit the ball.

Of course a combination of learning indoors and playing on a golf course is perfect, but hitting endless balls at a driving range and trying to hit yourself into good form is not really a good way to learn

My motto with my students is

“Learn more in an hour lesson than 20 hours on the range”
